LE DOMAINE DES VAROILLES Unique owner at GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN of "Clos du Meix des Ouches", of "LA ROMANEE 1er CRU" and of "CLOS DES VAROILLES 1 er CRU". The Clos des Varoilles is one of the Domaine of which there exists the oldest ducuments. This vineyard was planted before the twelfth century. It produces one of the most reputable Wines of Gevrey-Chambertin classified as "1er Cru". Here is what was writter by Gaston Roupnel, the famous Burgundy writer : "Rising above the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, la Côte Saint-Jacques lays out in line rows of its well-known wines : les Cazetiers, les Grandes-Charmes, le Clos Saint-Jacques, le Clos du Chapitre and finally the Varoilles Fameuses". Nothing in Burgundy perhaps doesn't equal the splendor of these rich and full-bodied wines. After a few years these dark first-class wines take on a parfumed odor of springtime and of violet. Camille Rodier one of the founding fathers of the "Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin" in his book "Les Vins de Bourgogne" after having named Charmes-Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin, adds : "Let us remake however, that other vineyards of the region are of comparable quality, even sometimes superior such as : Varoilles, Clos Saint-Jacques, Cazetiers. Fullness, character and at the same time possessing elegance with its perfume compared to that of the violet.
