THE HARVEST 2003

We started harvesting on the 25th of August, and have to go back to 1813 to find such an early harvest. Phenol content was at optimum maturity and there was no point in waiting in view of the risk that the grapes would dry up.

So as to avoid harvesting in too high a temperature, we picked from sunrise to midday. Our new thermostatically-controlled vats gave us total control over the temperatures during the pre-fermentation maceration and during fermentation itself. The results in terms of quality are encouraging, with a dark colour, highly fruity bouquet, silky tannins and a pleasing balance of acidity and alcohol levels.
Whilst the quality is there, unfortunately the quantity is modest as we were only able to produce, on average over the whole estate, 30 hectolitres per hectare.

BOTTLING OF THE 2002 VINTAGE AND THE CUVEE PRESTIGE 2001
The wines were bottled on the estate after 15 months in barrels, without any fining or filtering whatsoever in order to preserve all the character of the land on which the grapes were grown, and the rich aromas and fullness of the wines’ natural constituent elements.

The colours are very dark, with the red and black fruits finding full expression and rounded off with hints of vanilla and spices. The tannins are well rounded and distinguished, and the powerful structure of the wines is comparable to that of the 1999 and 2000 vintages.

As for the Cuvée Prestige 2001, which we bottled after 24 months in new barrels, it combines finesse and elegant distinction with the tannins from the new casks.

GUIDE HACHETTE 2004
The Guide Hachette 2004 awarded two stars to the Clos des Varoilles premier cru 2000 and considered it to be the best premier cru tasted, a wine passing on the three counts of volume, length and fruitiness. The wine-waiters’ Guide Fleurus rated it a “magisterial success”.
To be drunk from 2006. Full maturity: 2008.
